Clean Up Australia Day will be undertaken locally by all schools and members of the Rotary Club of Yarrawonga Mulwala this Friday, February 28.
Yarrawonga College P-12 teacher Belinda Pendergast and Rotarians met on Monday to confirm all the locations to be cleaned up by students and Rotarians which will include the school grounds, the cemetery and showgrounds.
School classes will clean up at various times during the day. Rotary’s clean-up program will get underway at 1.30pm, with a community meeting venue being the Rotary Pavilion in the showgrounds.
Sacred Heart College and Primary School students, and Mulwala Public School students will also be covering school and nearby grounds.
“It’s a great partnership, particularly junior students of the town being involved in contributing to clean towns in Yarrawonga and Mulwala,” Rotarian Ross Lloyd told the Yarrawonga Chronicle.
“With a bit of luck, generations to come will continue naturally cleaning up towns,” he said. “It’s education. It’s our environment, our home.”
“As a part of our Year 9 RE program at Sacred Heart College, students look at how they can be stewards of creation and look after the world around them,” Year 9/10 Co-ordinator at Sacred Heart College Tess Macrae said.
“In 2020, they are going to put their faith into action by participating in Clean Up Australia Day. They will be working in teams to clean up the foreshore of Lake Mulwala, and raising awareness in the school about waste management and how we can all contribute to looking after the environment.”
Mulwala Public School’s area of clean-up will be in and around the schoolgrounds, as well as the Mulwala Foreshore, and is being co-ordinated by teacher Laura Keech.
