Phillip and Lyn Cunnington are retiring after running the Lockington Post Office for 13 years

IT WAS the end of an era when Lyn and Phillip Cunnington closed the doors of the Lockington Post Office for the last time on Friday.

The post office will move to Helen’s Takeaway after the couple ran it for 13 years.

Lyn and Phillip are stepping away from the business to give them more time to travel and play bowls.

Originally dairy farmers in the area, the couple saw the post office as an interesting business opportunity when dairy was getting tough.

And what they found was a connection to the local community like no other.

Lyn said she hadn’t had an ounce of trouble with the business and loved the connections the couple had made.

“This is a great little area we live in. We aren’t city people so working in the post office has been perfect for us,” she said.

“It’s not a huge income business but there is plenty of demand and the locals like it.

“Lockington definitely needs a post office.”

Phillip said the rise in online shopping had only increased demand for the post office, with parcel deliveries skyrocketing in recent years.

“We went from a normal two parcels per day to around 50 a day,” he said. “Christmas is even bigger when we sometimes get 120 a day.”

The couple said they would continue to be part of the local community and wanted to maintain the connections they fostered in their time at the post office.

“We love Lockington. It’s easy living, the people are friendly and there are plenty of things to keep you busy,” Lyn said.

“We’re looking forward to backing off and having more time for leisure activities and travelling.”
