Premiership hero back at Tigerland

Kyabram Bombers Coach Dave Williams.

THERE is something special about the local hero coming home.

In 2018 across the region, many football stars will be back where it all started.

One that may be sneaking under the radar is Dave Williams.

But his impact may be huge.

The Goulburn Valley legend will be easing himself back into the football scene this season with Rochester.

After a long run as the top dog at multiple clubs, Williams will be back in a development role.

The Rochester and Kyabram premiership coach will assist new Rochester thirds’ coach Corey Windridge in the coming season.

‘‘He’s a good young bloke and I want to give him as much support as possible,’’ said Williams.

It’s been an incredible coaching career for Williams.

Williams last coached Kyabram in the GVL.

In his seven-year stint with the club, Williams brought the club the 2013 premiership — its first flag since 1996.

Williams handed the reigns over to Paul Newman at the end of the 2015 season, with Kyabram yet to lose a game since.

Williams’ stint with Kyabram came after a 16-year stint as coach of Rochester, which included the 1992 premiership.

This came after a 67 VFL game career with Melbourne and Richmond.

Williams’ return to the game looked unlikely late last year, after he knocked back an offer to coach the Shepparton Bears.

Williams said he wasn’t sure whether this stint at Rochester would make him want to coach again, but that he was looking forward to the challenge of returning to the game.
