Deni’s upset away victory

Deniliquin Bowling Club’s Division One ladies upset home side Moama by two shots on Friday in Campaspe Valley Bowls Division mid-week pennant.

The third-placed Deniliquin side won two of the three rinks in victory, handing the ladder leader their first loss of the season.

Jill Grimshaw’s team of Jenny Tonta, Brenda Leetham and Toni Brooksby were the heroes for the visitors, producing some excellent bowls.

The Deni quartet were leading 7-2 at the seventh end but a ‘three’ and a ‘four’ quickly took the opposition two shots up.

The visitors rallied to regain the lead and stayed in front until the end with a fine 24-17 win.

Vicki O’Keefe’s rink of Joy McArthur, Dawn McCulloch and Aileen Giles were equally as important in the win.

The Deni ladies scored a ‘six’ on the second end and maintained the lead until the 8th end when scores were levelled at 10 apiece.

With another ‘five’ on the 11th end the local ladies regained the lead and ended the day three shots up, 25-22.

Fay Munnerley’s rink of Joanne Bovell, Lyn Smith and Winnie Pattinson had a tough start, trailing 7-0 by the 7th end.

The Deni side did a good job to stay with the opposition for the rest of the game, however the damage had been done. They went down by eight shots in the end, 19-27.

Overall scores, Deni 68 defeated Moama 66.

Deni’s Division One side meet second placed Echuca White at Echuca in the last home and away round of the season this Friday.

The teams are: Jill Grimshaw (s), Jenny Tonta, Brenda Leetham, Toni Brooksby; Joy McArthur (s), Dawn McCulloch, Aileen Kennedy and Barbara Berry; Fay Munnerley (s) Joanne Bovell, Lyn Smith and Winnie Pattinson.

Deni’s Division Three also played Moama on Friday and also came home as winners.

Helen Anderson’s rink of Barbara Berry, Maxine Norton and Lorraine Tasker lost a ‘two’ on the first end but scored on the following four ends to lead 9-2.

The Deni quartet never looked back from here, finishing 12 shots up by the 25th and final end (36-24).

Robyn Little (s), Maureen King, Glenys Chessells and Rosie Jukes played out a tight game against Moama from start to finish.

The sides were 19-all with three ends to go, but Deni gave up two ‘ones’ and a ‘two’ which handed Moama a four-shot win, 19-23.

The Deniliquin side still won by eight shots overall to maintain top spot on the ladder heading into the final home and away round.

Deni Division Three play Echuca at Echuca on Friday. The teams are Robyn Little (s), Maureen King, Glenys Chessells and Rosie Jukes; Helen Anderson (s), Joy Mann, Maxine Norton and Lorraine Tasker.

Leads are taking cars.

■ Saturday’s Campaspe Valley Bowls Division pennant round was cancelled due to the heat.
